Rudi van der Merwe
Rudi is charismatic and mysterious. One only needs to talk 5 minutes with him to be totally fascinated. He is also modest and a little timid. Having watched practically all of his shows I immediately convinced that he needed to meet a larger audience. In his work I saw …. intelligence, humour, a highly developped sense of construction and mostly a lot of depth. With his unclassifiable talent he is at home in video, comic srtip, dance, you name it.
And finally, when I saw his magnificent Trophée, I knew we had to work together

The world is on the move. As we are suddenly ‘woke’ regarding gender and racial sensibilities, not to mention the realities of the Anthropocene, Blue Moves proposes an irreverent dismantling of anthropocentrism in order to rethink what it is to be human and our place in the world. The project draws inspiration from positions of vulnerability and subversion, like loss and mourning, pornography and infinity/eternity to test the limits of our conception of what it means to be human.
This might seem overly ambitious, arrogant even. However in a globalised world, connected by the internet and very probably on the edge of overwhelming changes, this ambition seems urgent and necessary. Moreover, beyond any poetical or philosophical considerations, Blue Moves aims to ignite a sense of the joy of movement, the simple pleasure of dancing, alone or in a group, as the only reason for our existence. This quest for movement is carried by blues music, which in itself serves as a metaphor for art as a means to rethink the world.

Riverbero (Poschiavo) – CH
Trophée is a site-specific performance on the themes of hunting, conquest and military tradition. Three performers in sumptous baroque dresses, accompanied by drummer, conquer a field like an invading army, adopting postures of trophy wives, hunted animals and ghosts from bygone wars. The piece advances towards the audience over 300 meters, playing with perspective. Trophée explores man’s relationship with his environment, the need to demarcate, possess, tame and exploit. This relationship is not limited to nature, but also to his fellow man. New battle lines are drawn and new identities take shape as humankind encounters the limits to this world view.
